중앙유라시아연구소 저명학자 초청강연 공지 강연제목: 모더니스트 보편주의, 새로운 전통주의, 대안적 근대성 사이에서: 일본과 터키의 서양과의 조우를 전지구사적으로 보는 관점들 Between Modernist Universalism, New Traditionalism, and Alternative Modernity: Perspectives on Japanese-Turkish Encounters with the West as global history 발표자: 셀축 에센벨 (이스탄불 보아지치 대학 역사학과 명예교수) Prof. Selcuk Esenbel, History Department, Bosphorus University 장소: 신양 인문관 4동 302호 Shinyang Humanities Builidng Rm 302 시간: 4월 19일 수 오후 4시 Wednesday, April 19, 4 pm 안녕하세요? 본 연구소에서는 터키에서 최고의 명문대학으로 꼽히는 보아지치(보스포러스)대학에서 동아시아 관련 강의와 연구를 지난 30년간 도맡아온 셀축 에센벨 교수의 강연을 마련하게 되었습니다. 에센벨 교수는 원래 일본사전공이지만 터키와 일본의 근대를 비교하는 연구를 많이 해왔고 국제 학계에서 높은 평가를 받아왔습니다. 터키와 일본의 서양과의 관계의 전개를 논하는 이 강연이 여러 전공의 학자들과 학생들에게 아무쪼록 재미있는 경험이 되기를 바랍니다. 발표는 영어로 하지만 동시통역이 제공됩니다. 다음은 강연자가 보내온 발표요지의 번역입니다. 이 발표는 19세기 일본과 터키의 개혁과 제국 및 20세기의 근대성 추구의 역사를 서양 숭배와 반서구주의가 서로 뒤섞인 전지구사로서 보려고 하는 것입니다. 메이지 시대의 일본인들과 오스만 투르크인들은 서양 열강의 세계 패권으로부터 제기되는 문제들을 공히 직면하였고 그에 대해 현지의 조건에 서구의 지식을 적응시키는 개혁을 함으로 대응하였는데 이는 서양의 사상과 기술을 신봉하는 (westernism) 접근방법이었으나 근대적 변용의 과정은 동시에 반식민주의, 반제국주의, 반서구주의의 조류를 통해 서양에 반기를 드는 것과도 관련되었으니 그것은 대안적 근대성의 모색을 동반했습니다. 현재의 일본과 터키는 서양을 따르는 형태와 서양을 거부하는 형태의, 근대성에의 평행하면서도 서로 경쟁하는 이 두 가지 접근법들의 산물이라 할 수 있습니다. The paper will venture to decipher Japan and Turkey’s history of reform and empire during the nineteenth and the quest for modernity in the twentieth century as an entangled history of Westernism and anti-Westernism as global history. The Meiji Japanese and the Ottoman Turks shared the same problem of facing the challenges from the global hegemony of the Western powers by undertaking reforms based on adapting Western know-how to local conditions that entailed a Westernist approach: the West as the Modern Universal or a component of New Traditionalism. However, the process of transformation also entangled with a revolt against the West through currents of anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism, and anti-Westernism that entailed the search for an Alternative Modernity.
